Baden is situated in Lower Austria, near the Viennese Woods, about twenty-five kilometers south of Vienna, and thirty-three kilometers south-west of the Vienna airport. The town is home to around twenty-five thousand inhabitants. Particularly in the first half of the nineteenth century it was the preferred summer resort of the Imperial Family. Baden is also renowned as a city of music. All great Austrian composers, almost all the composers of operettas as well as many famous poets visited or even lived in Baden for some time. Mozart, Salieri, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Strauss, Beethoven are just few of them. Sometimes called Schwefelstadt (sulphurous city), now Baden is a famous health resort, even appreciated by the Romans for its sulphur springs some two thousand years ago. Baden offers a huge variety of baths and springs, parks and gardens, coffeehouses, taverns, great wine places and various sport facilities. If there is snow, there are plenty of cross-country skiing opportunities. There are a lot of things to do in Baden. First of all stroll around its markets and places. Some interesting sites include the Josephplatz, which is a good starting point to explore the amenities of Baden, the Gruner Markt, and the Frauengasse. Also one should not miss the Parish Church, the theater and enjoy the Spa Park and the Doblhoffpark. There are some interesting shops in the pedestrian zone, one can relax at the Heuriger and of course enjoy the wellness facilities. Another great sight is the ruins of the medieval fortresses Rauheneck and Rauhenstein, which will reward one with a magic view of the Helenental.
