Villach

Villach is a town in Carinthia (the second largest there), near Italy and Slovenia, thus strongly affected by these different cultures. The town has 58 000 inhabitants and is at 500m above sea level. It is located near a mountain, a riverside and a lakeside, 48km away from Klagenfurt and 140km away from Salzburg. Villach is attractive with its beautiful surroundings and landscape and with its various attractions and activities. The town is a good starting point for exploring the Carinthia region and is located on the banks of the Drau River. This industrial town used to be a Roman settlement and belonged to the bishops of Bamberg from the 11th century to the coming of Maria Theresa.

Some of the attractions here are the Main Square Hauptplatz, the bridge over the Drau River, the Trinity Column (from 1739) and the Parish Church Pfarrkirche. The church is built in honour of St. Jacob and has baroque and Gothic mixtures. One can also see a panoramic relief of the province - the Relief von Kärnten in the Schillerpark, on Peraustrasse. If you prefer nature, you can visit the Villacher Alps – 18km away from the town, where the best panoramic places are marked. You can as well go to the Lake Faaker, which attracts swimmers and water-skiers during the summer with its hot waters (26°C).
Some other activities there are the Christmas, the New Year’s Eve, the Easter and the Epiphany markets, ice-skating on Rathausplatz, the Villacher Fasching carnival, the town fair, the Alpen-Adria pottery market, New Orleans festival, Harley Davidson European Bike Week, Carinthischer summer festival and many more.
Villach is located on the crossing of four important rail lines and has connections with many parts of Austria (Vienna and Klagenfurt for example) as well as Italy. You can also reach it by car from Klagenfurt, following the Autobahn A2.
