Tyrol (or Tirol) is a state in the western part of Austria, which represents the Austrian part of the historical area Tyrol. The territory of the state Tyrol is separated into two parts (North and East Tyrol) by the state of Salzburg. North Tirol is bounded by Bavaria (in Germany) on the north, by Vorarlberg on the west, by South Tyrol (in Italy) and Switzerland on the south and by the state Salzburg on the east. East Tyrol is bounded by the Austrian states Salzburg and Carinthia.
The capital of the state Tyrol is Innsbruck, which is extremely popular with its university. Tirol is the third largest state in Austria and its total territory is 12 648 sq km with population of 673 504 people.

 

Tyrol is separated into nine districts and a statutory town – Innsbruck. The districts with their administrative centers are Landeck (Landeck), Reutte (Reutte), Imst (Imst), Innsbruck-Stadt (Innsbruck), Innsbruck-Land (Innsbruck), Schwaz (Schwaz), Kufstein (Kufstein), Kitzbühel (Kitzbühel) (all of which are in North Tyrol) and Lienz (Lienz) which is in East Tirol.

The highest peak in the state is Großglockner in the Hohe Tauern, which is 3 798 m high. The state itself is widely known for its skiing resorts some of which include Kitzbühel and St. Anton. Other big towns include Kufstein, Schwaz, Reutte and Landeck. At the moment one of the most popular places for skiing is Kaunertal where you can admire the Gepatsch glacier and Weißsee peak.
